Everyone in Manchester knows about platform thirteen. Everyone who’s ever caught a train from Manchester Piccadilly train station, anyway. It’s always associated with inconvenience or downright misfortune.
Let me explain further. There are twelve platforms in the main concourse of this station, neatly lined up and conveniently placed near the cafes, shops and the station entrance (which is also the exit), and all these platforms are terminal, which in this context is a good thing. They’re at the end of the line. Or the beginning, depending on your journey.
Barbara Robinson is a Mancunian writer. Her short stories have appeared in Fictive Dream, Confingo Magazine, Ellipsis Zine, Cicerone Journal, Fragmented Voices and Willesden Herald New Short Stories.
